Community Health Workers in the Community Health Center Setting— Part 1

‘Comer Bien’ (Eat Well), Mariposa Community Health Center, Nogales AZ Community health workers have long been a part of Mariposa Community Health Center. Situated in Nogales on the U.S./Mexico border, the health center serves a predominantly low-income, Mexican-American community where food insecurity is prevalent. Reflecting high food costs, lack of public transportation and low awareness of the role of healthful diet and nutrition, nearly 14% of the health center’s patients suffer from diabetes and other chronic health conditions. Mariposa CHC launched the ‘Comer Bien’ (Eat Well) program in 2018, to address these issues with a specific focus on helping those with uncontrolled diabetes improve blood sugar control.

CHCs on the Frontlines of the Opioid Crisis during the COVID-19 Pandemic

America’s opioid epidemic has had a huge impact on the well-being of individuals and communities across the country, and 20 years into the epidemic there is a growing need for services. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated an already tenuous situation for many people. As businesses closed and isolation became necessary, many individuals suffering from opioid use disorder (OUD) lost the services and connections that helped them maintain stability and sobriety. Reports from national, state, and local media all indicate that opioid and drug-related mortality have increased since the pandemic started. We checked in with colleagues at Fenway Health (MA) and Central City Concern (OR) to learn about the programs and strategies they’ve developed to tackle the opioid crisis, and how they’ve addressed the unique challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amidst a Pandemic, Agricultural Workers Toil and Community Health Centers Adapt and Innovate

While COVID-19 has already put an end to many summer activities, it may be less apparent that it is also directly impacting our food supply and the workers who provide it. Our food supply is dependent on farm laborers —an essential workforce—who often risk their own safety and lives to provide the food we eat. Hired seasonally, agricultural workers are crucial during peak production periods. Working in fields, orchards, farms and canneries, they plant, cultivate, and process the crops. In contrast to states like California where the growing season is year-round, New York relies on the spring and summer season, when most crops are harvested.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on communities globally and nationally. Especially in low-income and high-risk communities, widespread illness was compounded by increases in unemployment and food insecurity. Fighting hunger is a public health issue. While many different organizations provide WIC services, Community Health Centers often offer WIC programs as part of their community-focused mission, especially in areas where nutritional risk is great. One such organization is Urban Health Plan (UHP), a health center serving many New York City neighborhoods.
